Responsibilities
We meet several times throughout the school year to organize the opening Mass for the start of the following year. This involves booking venues, coordinating with the various parishes, and ensuring the venues have everything they need to conduct the service. We also work with the archdiocese and the eparchy to get Edmonton’s archbishop, bishop, and priests involved at each venue.
Teacher Feedback
Every year, teachers tell us how much they appreciate starting out the year by coming together as a school community. Here’s what they have to say.

Floriana Bruni-Bossio
At the beginning of the new school year, we as teachers renew our commitment to Catholic education by holding a School Opening Mass. We find that thinking about how we make a difference to students, families, and our school and faith communities is a great way to start out the year.
This local tradition started in 1978 with a small Mass at the St. Joseph Basilica. It’s since outgrown the Winspear Centre and extended to four parishes throughout Edmonton.
During each Mass, we take up a collection that goes to organizations that support youth in need. These are just some of the organizations we have donated to in the past.
- Our local’s Social Justice initiatives
- Camp Encounter
- Development & Peace
- Foundations Champions Project
- Sign of Hope
- Stollery Children’s Hospital
- Ukrainian Eparchy Social Justice
- Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS)
The celebration was very well organized… I always enjoy the start of the year. It is uplifting and such a positive start.”
[It] very much felt like a community coming together in celebration of our faith in the way it should.”
Get Involved
We’re always looking for new members to help us plan this spiritually uplifting event. You can also contribute to the Mass as a reader, usher, acolyte, music ministry, or gift, candle, or cross bearer.
