Responsibilities
At the start of the school year, we get together to plan an event that reflects who we are as Catholic teachers. We oversee every part of the ceremony, from choosing the date and venue to finalizing the program to announcing the event. Every new teacher receives an email invite. Don’t worry, we double-check with all of our principals to make sure we haven’t missed anyone!
If you’re a new teacher, please feel free to bring a personal guest and your school’s principal to the initiation ceremony! The event typically lasts an hour and runs in the order below.
- Opening Introduction: Local President
- Opening Prayer
- Introduction: Special Guests
- Reading: Teaching a Profession
- Reading: Code of Professional Conduct
- Pledge: Acceptance of Membership in the Alberta Teachers’ Association
- Introduction: New Teachers
- Presentation: New Teacher Gifts
- Speech: Guest Speaker
- Speech & Blessing: Pastor
- Closing
It isn’t all business, though. After the formal ceremony, there’s a two-hour drop-in reception with appetizers and refreshments. It’s a great time for new teachers to meet other teachers, principals, trustees, ATA and ECSD staff, and members of the local.

As our name suggests, we plan and organize the New Teacher Induction Ceremony. This event is held every fall to welcome new Catholic teachers to the profession (or to Alberta, if they’re from out of province). It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate new teachers and recognize them for their responsibilities to students, parents, fellow teachers, and the teaching profession as a whole.
