Responsibilities
It’s our job to oversee the local’s finances. This involves making decisions and recommendations that keep the local on strong financial footing. We meet every spring to prepare the budget for the next fiscal year. When we do, we keep in mind factors like committee budget requests, event funds, and other expenses, as well as the number of teachers and schools paying union dues. Then we review the budget with Executive in late April.
As money is spent, we review the ongoing budget at each committee meeting. We examine monthly financial statements, determine how much requested program changes will cost, and discuss issues like union dues, local events, and funds spent. Our financial records are also reviewed every fiscal year by an accredited auditor. Every fall we meet to go over the audited statements.

The local’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. During that time, we ensure that the local’s funds are being spent for purposes that benefit the local, the committee chairs, and, of course, the teachers. So you can rest easy knowing that your union dues are being well spent and that we’re keeping good records.
