The month of March brings with it the promise of renewal. As we watch the snow melt away, as new buds begin to appear on trees, birds returning with their song, we are reminded of God’s faithful rhythm of rebirth and restoration. In this season of change, take a moment to appreciate the transformation that education has gone through this year. Thanks to your courage and conviction; you stepped into the unknown, accepted sacrifice, and stood firmly for what is just and true. Because of your willingness to act, the challenges facing education are illuminated for all to see. Though we endured loss in pay and in instruction time, Albertans (and the rest of Canada) witnessed something far greater. We as Catholic educators, stand for what is right, for the dignity of all, and for the common good.
We are already seeing hopeful change because of our actions. As the budget was released just last week; classroom complexities are at the forefront of public conversation. That is because of you and your bravery. While it may not feel like a personal victory, our collective action was a win for publicly funded Catholic education in Alberta. We demanded better for our classrooms, and we are seeing, although small, gains for our students. Now is the time to keep the pressure on. Continue to demand better for our students and for ourselves. Continue to share the realities of our classrooms and the needs that are increasing every day.
Thank you for everything you do. As spring break arrives, may you find time to step outside and embrace the beauty of this God given season of new beginnings.
In solidarity,
Amber Nicholson
