President’s Message – September 2025

As we begin this new school year, things feel different.

Instead of the usual excitement and anticipation, we’re facing uncertainty and tension. A looming job action, a lockout vote timed just before students return, unresolved issues in our collective agreement, and new legislation—all of it weighs heavily on us.

The start of this year is clouded by worry, anxiety, frustration, and even anger. But despite it all, we are teachers. And that means you will still show up—with open arms and warm smiles—to welcome your students. You will set aside your own fears and frustrations to create a safe, caring space for them. Because that’s what we do.

We are in public education because we believe in our students, in their futures, and in the greater good. Yet we work in a province where education is not treated as a priority. Alberta has the lowest per-student funding and largest class sizes in the country. Our classrooms are overcrowded. Some of you are teaching in staffrooms or libraries. Students are struggling in reading, writing, and math. Mental health concerns are rising. Support and resources are shrinking. And we haven’t seen a salary increase in over a decade.

Enough is enough.

It’s time to stand up—for our students, for our classrooms, and for ourselves. We must demand better conditions, better support, and fair compensation. We must stay united, support one another, and take care of ourselves.

As we enter this year with uncertainty, let us be certain of this:

If we fight together, we win.
