Teachers: Stuff You Should Know! June 2021

  • If you have a child graduating from high school and entering their first year of post-secondary, they are eligible to apply for a scholarship sponsored by the teachers of Local 54.
  • Taking the Diversity Training (EDIR) modules is a professional responsibility. But more than that, the local supports this opportunity to “action” our commitment as teachers to understand and examine our personal views. Article one of the Code of Professional Conduct (below) demands this of all of us:

The teacher teaches in a manner that respects the dignity and rights of all persons without prejudice as to race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, physical characteristics, disability, marital status, family status, age, ancestry, place of origin, place of residence, socioeconomic background or linguistic background.

  • New “Safe Spaces” materials (posters, stickers, magnets) will soon be available. Contact DEHR@ata.ab.ca for more information.
  • Save the date for LISA (Legal Issues for School Administrators). This ATA-sponsored conference will take place October 27–28, 2021. For more info, go to www.teachers.ab.ca.
  • Kathy MacIsaac is retiring (mostly) and Suzanne Rosko is retiring (completely)! This will be effective in October/November. The ad for Kathy’s position will be posted on our website in mid-August.
  • We wish you a relaxing, sun-filled summer. We know this year has demanded a great deal and we applaud each one of you. Stay “teacher strong!” See you in September.
